The church of St Elphin was the first parish church in Warrington. It was mentioned in the Domesday as holding the area of land that was exempt from all usual dues except tax. Originally it was a wooden building dating from AD675. The present structure dates from 1226 being the oldest part at the east end of Warrington. Since that date, though, it has undergone many changes. The present chancel, built in the Decorated style, belongs to the third church that was constructed in 1354 by Sir William Boteler. (His Son Thomas Laid the funds for Thomas Boteler Grammer School)
The spire was added quite recently in 1860 and is the third tallest spire in England. In 1943 the former Boteler Chapel, with fine oak paelling, became the South Lancashire Regimental Chapel.
